The owner of a Brighouse hotel appeared in court today (Friday) on charges relating to the collapse of a balcony that seriously injured five people.

Jack McDaid, of the Casa Hotel and Restaurant, Elland Road, appeared alongside hotel manager Sam Holmes at Calderdale Magistrates’ Court following the incident on February 15, 2013.

The court heard the accident happened when Mr McDaid was showing four women around a first floor bridal suite and took them onto the balcony, when it suddenly gave way.

The prosecution has been brought against Casa Events Ltd, Elland Road, Brighouse, and Castelite Ltd, of York Place, Leeds, who are charged with breaches of the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974.

Neither Casa Events Ltd or Castelite Ltd entered a plea.

John Smith, chairman of Magistrates, said the matter would be referred to Bradford Crown Court, as it was “appropriate” for the case.

The hearing was adjourned for the Crown Court case on September 26.
