Police are appealing for the community’s help to bring a graveyard thief to justice.
The appeal comes after a gravestone in Rastrick Cemetery marking the recent passing of a loved one had items stolen from it. A solar powered light and flowers were dug up from the plot sometime between last Tuesday and Friday.
PC Matt Catlow of the Lower Valley Neighbourhood Policing Team, said: “A gravestone marks the passing of loved ones. It should be sacred and respected and left in one piece.
“To take items like this that probably have little in the way of monetary value but strong sentimental value to grieving families is heartless in the extreme.
“This grave is only a year old - so the person’s death is obviously fresh in the mind of family and friends of the deceased. We are doing our bit - officers are increasing high visibility patrols in the area and will continue on with them.
“But we cannot be there all of the time. We need the community to be our eyes and ears and to report any suspicious activity they witness.”
