A junior football club is appealing for donations to help realise its dream of securing a dedicated pitch for playing and training.

Beacon Rangers, based in Southowram, currently has no fixed pitch and as the team grows it is hoped the club will one day have a firm base of its own.

Nigel Freeman, coach and school liaison officer for the club, said: “The club aims to give all children, boys and girls, the opportunity to play football, regardless of their abilities and regardless of any financial limitations that their families may be experiencing.

“Because of this, Beacon keeps its membership fees as low as practically possible and usually raises any extra funds required via the local community.

“The club has no firm base of its own, playing and training on a mixture of borrowed and rented land, and is facing some unusual expenses like a pitch that has been vandalised and a longer term project to provide the children with further playing and changing facilities, in order to cater for a growing number of players and teams.

“People in Southowram, where the club is predominantly based, and in Siddal, where three of the teams are currently training, are rallying round to raise funds to try and help secure a longer term future.

“The response so far has been very positive and what is needed to make the dream become a reality is a push from the wider Halifax community.”

And if you are interested in helping to coach children’s football, Nigel would love to hear from you.

It doesn’t matter if you have not done it before, as you would be paired with experienced FA trained CRC and DBS checked coaches.

Nigel added: “All that is needed is the right attitude and a willingness to do your best, which is all that the coaches ask in return from the players.”
