MEMBERS of Brighouse Probus Club met at Cleckheaton Golf Club for their annual autumn lunch.
The president of Brighouse Rotary Club, Judith Poole, was the special guest, accompanied by her husband Philip. The guest speaker, Beryl Jenkins, gave a talk about the life of comedian Pam Ayres and read some of her poems and short stories.
More than 40 club members who attended the October meeting were given an entertaining talk and slide presentation by Paul Kenny on the subject of ‘The legend that is Robin Hood’.
He described how difficult it had been to find out reliable information about the historic figure and to sort out the myth from the facts.
Mr Kenny said Robin was reputedly the outlaw son of Loxley, born in 1160, with opinions differing on whether he was born near Wakefield or Nottingham. According to one source of information, he lived in Barndale Forest, near Wentbridge, on the route of the King’s highway from north to south; the more popular belief is that Sherwood Forest was the base for his activities.
Even the details of the end of his life are controversial with Kirklees Hall being the reputed site of his grave.
The next meeting is on November 14.
