Climbing to success

Several climbers at Rokt have been selected to represent Yorkshire in the grand final of the UK British Mountaineering Club Youth Series.

Gus Turner, Will Smith, Robin Casey and Louis Shepherd will be heading to EICA Ratho, Scotland, on Saturday.

The Brighouse climbing gym opened its doors on April 2, 2011, and one of the most important aspects both Euan Noble and Leigh Topping wanted to achieve was a sense of family and team.

“In early 2012 we announced that we would set up a three-tier team system, The Academy, the Team and The Elite Team,” said Euan, after some tough assessments. “Since July 2012 we have been overwhelmed by the dedication of everyone who comes to train but more significantly the parents who have organised themselves into a mobile coaching unit taking the incredibly talented young climbers to competitions.

“The Rokt team is a force to be reckoned with, they train twice a week with Elite Coaching from Garry Cummings, Rokt chief instructor Nathan Phillips and Nik Jennings, a specialist performance coach.

“Clive Phillips, Nathan’s father has been a real driving force, Lawrence Shephard, Louis’ dad provided the team kit and many of the other parents now compete and win their categories.

“Going to Scotland to represent Yorkshire is a fantastic achievement after just one year as a team; they not only represent their country but Rokt and Brighouse and if that doesn’t make you proud, then nothing will.”
