Shoppers are calling for a revival of Brighouse market as part of Love Your Local Market fortnight.
The market in Canal Street which runs on Wednesday and Saturday, is privately owned by Northern Markets, but concerns have been raised about it fading away.
One shopper Alison Lester said: “The state of the market is somewhat of an embarrassment, with such a low occupancy that it hardly seems worth continuing. There is a stalwart group of traders based in the outer stalls, and a mish-mash of a few other traders on part of the second row. The rest of the market lies empty.
“I am a regular user of the market, and often visit the fruit and vegetable stall and fish stall but it is such a shame that while other local markets are thriving and being promoted, Brighouse market seems to be fading away.”
She said there are some fantastic events taking place in the town such as the Totally Locally events and the 1940s weekend in June and it was a shame that the market seemed to be neglected.
Owner Michael Dunn of Northern Markets said he would be willing to give people a free trial for a month.
“I am willing to give people two months at the price of one if they are willing to set up a stall that is different to something that is already there.”
Anyone interested in the free trial can contact him directly on 07889332064 or his office on 01617 232384.
