A Calderdale barber’s shop has proved a cut above the rest after being chosen to star in a new fly-on-the-wall TV show that will air next year.

And they are looking for customers with personality to star in the show.

Wayne Anthony’s barber shop, Halifax Road, Hipperholme, beat competition from 500 shops from across the country for the Sky One show “At The Barbers”.

After months of applications owner Wayne had to pitch to the show’s producers alongside 10 finalists.

“I didn’t think we had a cat in hell’s chance against shops in London but I nailed the pitch to be honest,” he said.

“I was ecstatic when I got the phone call about a week ago. They loved the quirkiness of the shop.

“The filming will start around November for six weeks and we hope the show will start before the end of the year.”

It’s a fantastic coup for the business that only opened in February this year although Wayne did previously own a chain of five shops.

He has won more than 50 awards across the country and has thirty years experience as a barber.

“I wanted it to be a real man’s experience,” he said.

“We have a 1920s theme with authentic original fittings that I’ve picked up from all over the country and we have a mannequin in the window who’s always in authentic dress.

“There is music playing all day to keep the atmosphere and there’s even a bar where you can help yourself to a drink.

“It’s a proper experience for men having their hair cut. There are lots of lovely salons for women but this is a real bloke’s place.”

Cameras will be in the shop filming the banter and day-to-day workings but one of the key components will be the customers.

“We are on the look out for four or five personalities to be on the show,” said Wayne.

“We already have Disco Dave, a cage fighter with a mohican, and Peter Coenen, a dancer, but we need more people to get in touch.”

If you want to be part of the show pop in to the shop or call 01422 202848 to set up an appointment.
