The Retailer of the Year Award, sponsored by the Holiday Inn, Brighouse, is designed to acknowledge the contribution made by the retail sector to business life in Brighouse.

Brighouse is proud of its reputation as a town of largely independent stores that have a unique understanding of the needs of their customers and a special ability to offer service and quality.

Patricia Lawton, of the Holiday Inn, Brighouse, presented the award to the winner Artisan Fireplace Design.

Artisan is an independent, local, family-run business which employs 30 local staff in the centre of Brighouse.

It offers a shopping experience different from other fireplace retailers with a choice of fires, stoves and fires, set over three floors in the converted Phoenix Mill.

Host Clare Frisby said: “Artisan attracts customers from throughout the north to visit Brighouse at Europe’s largest fireplace showroom.

“It has been serving customers in Brighouse and Yorkshire since 1986, installing 120,000 fires, fireplaces, and stoves.

“With a knowledgeable, skilled, fully qualified and friendly team, customers come back to Artisan throughout their lifetime.”

Sue Malthouse, of Artisan, said: “It was fantastic to be nominated but to win - wow.”

Also shortlisted were Ryecorn Wholefoods, Overgate Hospice shop, Park Row Hair and Beauty, and Bloomin Chic.

Ryecorn Wholefoods has been an independent retailer in Brighouse since the early 1970s and believes in organic food and an essential link between a good diet and good health. The shop promotes the town positively all over Yorkshire and plays a key part in the successful events that are run by Brighouse Business Initiative.

From designer outfits to a second-hand sofa, Overgate Hospice charity shops provide shoppers with more or less everything they need.

Mainly run by volunteers, all the money raised is put towards running costs for Overgate Hospice.

Since Park Row Hair and Beauty moved into its current prominent position on Bradford Road, the salon has gone from strength to strength. On nominating the business, customers said they have friendly staff and a great atmosphere and truly do Brighouse proud.

Florist Bloomin Chic provides a fantastic service to the people of Hipperholme and beyond, going out of the way to deliver the best possible results.
