Brighouse businesses and community groups are set to give one of the town’s key features a makeover.

Organised by Lidia Shinwell, director of Prego Restaurant, the town will be holding its fifth canal clean up on Sunday at 10am.

“We are approaching our fifth canal clear up and the volunteers keep coming forward”, said Lidia.

“The main objectives are to clean debris and overgrowth in and around the water from canoes, on Saville (the Calder Navigation Societies beautiful barge) and by foot from the towpaths. We want to put Brighouse firmly on the map.”

The last four canal cleans were a resounding success with the spring clear up allowing the volunteers to venture further down the waterways towards Brookfoot Mills.

The fantastic support of British Waterways, Pennine Canoe Club, the Calder Navigation Society, Rokt Climbing Gym and Sainsbury’s Brighouse has ensured the clear up events take place safely, with supplies, boats, buoyancy aids all taken care of.

“We are very grateful for the effort the volunteers put in. I know they enjoy it and agree that it gives a great sense of satisfaction and achievement. Please come along if you would like to get involved.”
