Brighouse is set to receive a massive economic boost if plans to expand Assisted Area Status to include parts of Calderdale go ahead.
If government proposals for 2014-20 get the thumbs-up, Brighouse and Elland will be included in Assisted Area Status for Leeds City Region. As a result there will be greater levels of support for businesses already in the Brighouse area or who move into the area and more potential for them to expand.
Calderdale Council’s Cabinet member for Economy and Environment, Coun Barry Collins, said: “This is something we have lobbied for and, if granted, it would be great news for Calderdale. Asssited Area Status would allow our businesses to access more funding, which in turn will stimulate growth and create much-needed jobs.
“Strengthening the economic prosperity of two of our key towns, Brighouse and Elland, would bring wider benefits across Calderdale.”
Consultation on the proposals closed on February 7 and the Government will now submit them to the EU for a final decision. Roger Marsh, chair of Leeds City Region Enterprise Partnership, said: “We can unlock the region’s potential if we are given the powers locally to drive our economy forward.”
