Brighouse and Rastrick Band has made the historic decision to establish a youth band for the first time.
The youth band is expected to be up-and-running during May under the newly appointed musical director Dean Redfern, formerly of Rochdale Youth Band, Boarshurst Youth Band, Delph Youth Band and more recently cornet player and chairman of B & R.
His ambition is to make Brighouse and Rastrick Youth Band one of the best in the country. He said: “We believe it’s a very positive move to help secure the long term future of Brighouse and Rastrick Band and to further provide additional musical opportunities for young players in the area.
“The ultimate aim is to duplicate the success of the senior band by becoming one of the leading youth bands in the country and developing young players to hopefully join the senior band in years to come.”
Support from the new venture has come from instrument-maker Yamaha and Dean believes the youth band will be performing concerts later this year and competing in various competitions from early next year.
Band president Paul Beaumont said: “Potential players shouldn’t miss out on a great opportunity to be part of something unique and very special right from the start. As well as players we welcome parents to get involved with the day to day organisational side of running the youth band and potentially the senior band as well”.
B & R Youth Band welcomes any player aged 18 or below who can play to an acceptable level. Any interested players are welcome to attend an open day at B & R’s bandroom at Finkil Street, Brighouse on Saturday, April 27 from 10.30am to 3.00pm. Auditions will be held on the day or the weekend after on Saturday, May 4, also at the bandroom from 10am to 2pm.
