A day at the races

Race day approaches for the regulars of the Roundhill at Rastrick as the annual race trips will take place in the early part of August.

The menfolk of the pub will be heading for Thirsk on August 3 and landlord Rick Starkey says there are currently around 10-15 spaces available.

“We don’t buy the tickets for the course entry until the week before and we have booked a big enough bus as we often have a few last minute people booking on,” said Rick. The Roundhill ladies have booked a private box and will head to Pontefract races on August 7.

More than 30 real ales, five lagers and a variety of ciders will be served up at the Bower Beerfest on July 27 and 28. The sixth annual festival will be held at Hall Bower Athletic Club, Newsome, Huddersfield, from noon to 11pm on both days. There will also be live music and a barbecue.

The award-winning Little Valley Brewery is the stopping-off point during a five-mile walk around the eastern slopes of Cragg Vale near Hebden Bridge on Thursday, July 25. The walk will include tastings at the brewery. Walkers should meet at 10.30am at the brewery car park at Turkey Lodge Farm, New Road, Cragg Vale.

The Head of Steam in Huddersfield is showcasing Yorkshire beers throughout July. The selection of fine ales on offer includes Samuel Smiths, Black Sheep, Copper Dragon, Timothy Taylor’s, Ossett and Daleside.

A charity day to raise funds for Cancer Research will be held at Brighouse Sports Club on July 27 from noon when George Holland XI take on a team selected by Lee Robson. There will also be a match between a New Zealand masters and Royal Air Force Masters side. There will be family entertainment, barbecues, stalls, raffles, silent auction and bouncy castle.
