WORK is under way on a new multi-million pound primary school at Lightcliffe.
Pupils are continuing their lessons at Cliffe Hill Community Primary School in Stoney Lane while work goes ahead in the school grounds on a new state-of-the-art building.
It is hoped work will be completed later this year.
The school's nursery unit which was in the school grounds has been demolished to clear the way for the new development.
Head teacher Mrs Lindsay Lomas, who described the plans as an exciting project for Cliffe Hill, said she was delighted work had started on the new school.
"We are looking forward to seeing work progress in the coming weeks," she said.
Plans for the school were approved 12 months ago.
The new building will include an external community room, which will be partly covered, additional parking, and it is being built specifically to meet the needs of the school.
The majority of the building will be at ground level with a second storey on one side and it will be built around the external community room providing a focal point.
Each class will have a separate garden area which will be covered with a canopy. Nursery and reception children will also have a soft play area. The downstairs floor will be linked via one corridor.
There will be nursery, infant and junior classrooms, a hall, shared areas and a library to cater for the 210 pupils, plus a specialist unit for children with autistic disorders.
The outdoor areas will include additional space for sport and football pitches will be set out where the present school building is located. The existing hard-surfaced playground will stay where it is for sports such as rounders. Allotment areas will also be created.
There will be additional parking around the school which should lead to fewer cars parking on Stoney Lane during the day and when the school holds events for parents they will be able to park within the grounds.
The school is the first in Calderdale to receive funding from the Government's Primary Capital Programme.
The Government is committed to renewing at least half of all primary school buildings by 2022/2023 through the programme. The aim is to create primary schools that are equipped for the 21st century teaching and learning and are at the heart of the community with children's services in reach of every family.
