A METER fault is believed to have caused a severe blaze at a pensioner's Lightcliffe home.
Health and safety officers are studying a fire investigation report to see if lessons can be learned from the fire which destroyed 80-year-old Mrs Ivy Fairburn's home in Smith House Lane on Monday morning.
The pensioner was rescued by two care officers and an off-duty police sergeant when she went back into her burning home, a Pennine 2000 bungalow.
Neighbour Mrs Jean Watson explained how fortunate Mrs Fairburn had been after they had both heard a loud whooshing noise.
Mrs Fairburn, who lost many of her belongings in the blaze, was outside chatting to 78-year-old Mrs Watson at about 8.30am when they became aware of a burning smell.
"We saw smoke coming from her bungalow, then there was a bang and a whoosh," said Mrs Watson. "Ivy ran back into the bungalow which was full of smoke."
