BRIGHOUSE Charity Gala officials have their fingers firmly crossed for perfect weather in Brighouse tomorrow (Saturday). They feel confident there won't be a repeat of last year when the gala had to be postponed until September because of torrential downpours and flooding during June.
And they are hoping there will be blue skies and sunshine for the event in Wellholme Park, which promises to be another winner raising lots of cash for charity.

A full programme of entertainment is lined up from 2pm in the park including old favourites and some newcomers. There will be dogs and ducks, babies and brass bands and while the traditional procession through the town will be shorter than in previous years, organisers are hoping there will be even more taking part.

An open meeting was held at Hove Edge on Monday night to make sure final arrangements were in place and by Saturday afternoon there will be side shows, stalls, games and competitions all ready to make sure the crowds are kept entertained.

Regulars, including Cowboys On Wheels, Brighouse Star Twirlers, the Diamond Gymnastic Display Team, Rastrick Crickettes and Brighouse Rangers' Rugby Junior Team, will be providing entertainment in the main arena.

The popular dog show, sponsored by Cobbydog, includes pedigree and novelty classes and entries will be accepted on the field from 1pm with judging starting at 2pm. Tickets for the duck race, which is timed to go ahead at 5pm, are being sold by junior rugby members of Huddersfield YMCA . They will also be available on the day.

The gala will be opened at 2pm by Gala Queen Cassie Firth supported by gala attendant Emily Booth. Cassie will be crowned by retiring Gala Queen Kat Couchman before she officially opens the event.

Cassie and Emily will start the day early with visits to the hairdresser's and beautician's and flowers will be provided by Simply Flowers of Brighouse.

The platform party will also include Calderdale's civic heads, Coun Conrad Winterburn and Mrs Hilary Winterburn, and Calder Valley MP Chris McCafferty.

Winners of the fancy dress competition, sponsored by the Brighouse Echo, will be presented with their prizes during the opening ceremony and afterwards there will be a programme of non-stop music on the stage Those taking part include the popular Red Rose Jazz Band. and there will be a Live Music Show starring Reggae band Gabbidon, from Birmingham, Crosscut Saw Resonation, vocalist Sarah Taylforth, Cyclone Pink and Bucktooth Coolhands.

The Pulse Roadshow will also keep the crowds entertained and there will be Punch and Judy shows and donkey rides for the children.
