FRIENDS of disgraced family man Joe Tully, who has been involved in the football scene in Brighouse for many years, have spoken of their shock after the 62-year-old was jailed for growing cannabis.
Bradford Crown Court heard that Mr Tully, a devoted dad and grandad, grew cannabis in his home at Fletcher Crescent, Rastrick, to clear his gambling debts.
He was sent to prison for nine months after pleading guilty to possessing cannabis with intent to supply, being concerned in the production of cannabis and possessing amphetamines with intent to supply.
More than 40 skunk cannabis plants were found growing in bedrooms at his home last May. The cannabis would have been worth in the region of £16,000 on the street and amphetamines worth £2,000 were discovered in a freezer.
Mrs Lesley Tully, 55, admitted a charge of permitting premises to be used for the production of cannabis and was given a conditional discharge for two years. Mr Tully told the police his wife had no involvement and the drugs were his.
Miss Shazma Zaman, for Mr Tully, said he accepted what he did was wrong and had created the situation by accruing a gambling debt. His foolish actions had implicated his wife in the proceedings.
