Stacey Rodgers from Huddersfield lost her 10 year old son Dominic in 2004 in a tragic accident when carbon monoxide fumes leaked into their home from an adjoining property. Stacey later set up the Dominic Rodgers Trust and campaigns tirelessly to raise awareness about this deadly gas and the simple ways to prevent more deaths.

Estate Agent Nicky Tyman decided to find out more after hearing several stories on the news about deaths due to CO poisoning and contacted Stacey after seeing her on television and in the local media. Stacey says "the support from Novahomes is brilliant. This step should encourage other estate agents to think about their properties and the safety of people in them"

Gary & Nicky, owners of the local agency, have a 2 year old daughter and have smoke and CO alarms in their home. They feel that all properties should be fitted with these effective devices.

From now on, all information packs left with prospective vendors at the valuation appointment will include an Information Sheet about the harmful effects of Carbon Monoxide. In addition, the couple have also pledged to provide a free CO alarm to the new owners of each house purchased from them, if the property does not already have one.

Huddersfield MP Barry Sheerman backs Stacey's campaign and says "this is a great local initiative and helps us immensely in persuading banks, building societies and home insurers that every home should have a carbon monoxide detector and a smoke alarm".
Nicky Tyman says "our families and particularly children are so precious and nobody would want to experience what Stacey went through, but many people aren't taking these simple steps to protect themselves".

Be CO aware
Install an audible alarm in your home, ideally in each room with a gas appliance
Ensure your alarm is officially approved, to EN 50291, with a british or european mark on it, like the kitemark
Get your gas appliances serviced regularly by a person approved by GasSafe (previously Corgi)
Know the symptoms of CO poisoning

~ nausea
~ breathlessness
~ collapse
~ lack of consciousness
