A day full of surprises

THERE were sharp-shooting cowboys and a gala queen armed with a bow and arrow. There was Mary Poppins and her magic umbrella, a bucking bull and gymnnasts with a different view of the world.
A former gala queen returning from Germany to the scene of her 1980 triumph and an ex-Brighouse journalist, now living in South Africa who reported on galas in the '80s, were among the hundreds of visitors from near and far who helped to make this year's gala all the more memorable.

And while the sun stayed hidden for most of the day the warm, dry weather ensured that more people stayed longer and spent a little extra on what proved to be a fun-filled day enjoyed by young and old.
