That name rings a bell

BRIGHOUSE has produced all kinds of music and musicians.

From brass bands, to orchestras, concert bands, marching bands and an almost endless list of choirs, singers, pianists and organists.

We even had a musical composition by Orlando Sladdin, a highly respected musician of his time and a member of one of Brighouse’s well known families from the 19th century and well into the last century with Sladdin’s men’s outfitters in Bradford Road and a similar branch in Cleckheaton.

The composition titled ‘Our New Made Borough Town’ with words by James Sutcliffe, music from Orlando Sladdin was written to celebrate the incorporation of the Brighouse Borough in 1893.

Having read through the music and words it is hardly a catchy little number but it did celebrate a special occasion in the history of Brighouse.

One group of musicians that has been around since the 19th entury is Clifton Handbell Ringers. In this photograph dated 1990 shows eight members performing, with sixteen hands and so many more bells – it is certainly a musical challenge.
