THREE contemporary Yorkshire artists are collaborating for the first time in an exhibition at the Smith Art Gallery, Brighouse, from November 24.

Painters Phil White, of Thornton, Bradford and Tony Broadbent, of Leeds, and sculptor Janet Hollins, of Harrogate, have contributed to the ‘Canvas - Paper - Stone’ exhibition.

The three artists got in touch with each other through Facebook and other social networking sites and now meet up regularly.

“We all work in very different ways but all the pieces complement each other,” said Phil who is originally from Runcorn and works mainly on canvas and paper.

“I strive to capture life’s events and how we adapt to new situations, relationships and encounters,” he said.

Janet Hollins has a studio in Harrogate where she creates figurative, semi-abstract sculptures, mainly in stone. Her work has been influenced by Barbara Hepworth and Henry Moore.

Recently she has been studying for a Masters degree in Fine Art. She said: “I find working in stone is a privileged and humbling experience - it has beauty, strength and permanence.”

Tony Broadbent has been painting for more than 40 years and recently he exhibited as one of the top 100 emerging UK artists at the Other London Art Fair. He paints in many styles but mainly uses oil on canvas.

The exhibition has been curated by Joan Tillotson who said there was a common thread underpinning all their work. Brighouse schools have been invited to participate in activities during the exhibition.

The exhibition will be opened by the deputy Mayor of Calderdale Coun Christine Beal and runs until next January.
