Roger revisits his song of young love
BRIGHOUSE singer-songwriter Roger Davies has collaborated with Yorkshire band The Durbervilles on a new single which will be released next month.
Roger, whose reputation on the music scene has been steadily growing over the past five years, has revisited one of his most popular songs ‘Stephanie’ and recorded it with the five-piece folk rock band. It will be released on March 16 with a launch gig at Square Chapel arts centre, Halifax at 7.30pm.
He said: “A solo version of ‘Stephanie’ was on my last album ‘Songs in Plain English’ but this new collaboration with The Dubervilles has resulted in a more dynamic rendition.
“It came about when I met David Crickmore, who is a producer for BBC Radio Leeds and guitarist for The Durbervilles.
“He suggested we collaborate on one of my songs so we went into the studio in Keighley. It was a bit of good luck and I think the song sounds great with the accompaniment of drums, mandolin, accodion and other instruments.”
Roger, who grew up in Clifton and attended Brighouse High School, said: “The song ‘Stephanie’ is about young love and, like many of my songs, there’s a lot of truth in it. Needless to say, a lot of water has gone under the bridge since I wrote it!”
Much of Roger’s output has been inspired by growing up in Brighouse and Calderdale and the titles include ‘Brighouse on a Saturday Night’, ‘Peter Brook’s Paintings’, ‘Huddersfield Town’ and ‘Percy Shaw’.
In the past he has performed with Brighouse and Rastrick Band and the poet Simon Armitage.
“The Dubervilles are used to collaborating with other singers and it was a great experience to be in the studio with them. I’m really pleased with the result and I hope the audience will like it,” said Roger.
Tickets for the Square Chapel gig are available from 01422 349422.
Roger will also be singing at the Black Swan Folk Club in York on Thursday, January 31 at 8pm.
