Hipperholme Grammar School filled with music as the annual battle between the school’s three houses took place.

Pupils from each year group competed against each other in a range of musical categories, such as voice, piano and woodwind to find an outright winner. Points were then awarded to those performing for first, second and third place.

New Year Seven pupils performed for the first time in the competition with a variety of pieces across all categories.

In Year Eight Madeleine Snowball gained first place and second top points for Broadley House in both piano and woodwind categories. She also took third place for her vocal. Other outstanding vocalists were Olivia Speechley and Emilia Cooper.

Year Nine pupil Robert Featherstone gained first place for his vocal performance and second place in the cornet category. The winner of the brass category in Year Nine was Sarah Whaites.

Vicky Bryson in Year Ten stormed through winning first place for Broadley House in three categories, voice, string and piano. Anna Russell performed twice and won considerable points for Lister House for Year 11.

Sixth form students were the last to perform. Twins Oliver and Becky Firth fought a fierce competition to take first and second places respectively in the voice category. Oliver also triumphed with a first place for Lister.

The difficult task of judging the lower school competition fell to six form music students Charlotte Bryson, Oliver Firth, Stephanie Robinson and Angus Hirst who each competed in the second school categories. Music teachers Joan Zarneh and Gary Clegg took on the task for the upper school and six form.

The overall winners were Broadley House with 298 points, Lister failed to catch up with their creditable 243 points, Sunderland struggled to keep pace, finishing third with just 100 points.

The winners of each category will now be invited to participate in the school’s Young Musician of the Year competition in March.
