HAPPY hoofers will be taking to the floor at North Bridge Leisure Centre, Halifax, on Sunday, January 20 to participate in the annual charity Tapathon.

Dancers from 16 classes in and around Calderdale will be taking part in the 17th annual event to raise money for the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation.

Last year the Tapathon achieved the ambitious target of reaching £200,000 raised since the event was started in 1997 by Roy and Vera Hamer of Brighouse, who were good friends of popular entertainer and musician Roy Castle.

Janet Austin, of Janet Austin Tappers in Brighouse and Huddersfield, took over the running of the event last year and was delighted that more than £10,800 was raised on the day.

She said: “This year it’s good to know that dance schools are still happy to take part and that the enthusiasm is still there for the Tapathon. Everyone feels this is a very worthy cause and comments on the feel-good factor of the day.”

Taking part will be the Janet Austin Tappers, Dorothy Stevens School of Dance, Lightcliffe, Whiteley’s Academy, Halifax, the North Bridge Tappers, Hoofers from Sowerby Bridge and dancers from other local schools.

“Last year it was a bit daunting to take over the running of the event as Derek and Vera Hamer had done such a wonderful job for so many years.

“But, with the help of family and friends, we got through the day and raised a fantastic amount for a good cause.

“The important thing is that the Tapathon keeps going.”

There will be non-stop dance action from 10.15am to around 3pm on the day.

There will be stalls and a raffle as well as a ‘guess the number of dancers’ competition. Sponsors include AD Hewett dental practice but Janet is keen to hear from other interested business sponsors on 077092 83438.

Scholes-born Roy Castle - a dancer, musician, singer and comedian - died from lung cancer in 1994, despite being a non-smoker.
