Great plans for library
A Friends group has been set up to help Rastrick Library.
The primary aims of the group are to improve access to the library in Crowtrees Lane, to increase usage of the building and to foster better links with the wider community.
It is thought that the Friends of Rastrick Library will open up many possibilities and will work in conjunction with Calderdale Council and the library services and the community.
Alan Flux who is acting as chair of the group, said: “The library is a wonderful building and so much more could happen there,” he said.
“We are concerned about access. For instance Highbury School could regularly attend but it is only those that can walk up the steps. That is frustrating for the school, the students and parents there.
“So we came to the conclusion let’s try and do something. On Saturday, March 9, we are going to hold some sort of meeting for people to come in and see what the benefits are. Someone will say a few words to all those that gather.”
The idea to form the group was brought up at the Centenary celebrations at the library and has been put in progress by members of Rastrick Local History group, although the two will be kept separate.
There will be displays for people to look round at the library. The one at the moment is the Coronation of George VI.
“We got this display of international news but there is also some stuff there that was happening in Rastrick at the same time,” he said. “Rastrick is a lovely building and we want people to come and visit because we don’t want it to be shut down because it is a key thing in the community.
“If people are unable to attend on the Saturday then just give your name and number to the librarian. I would also be interested in anyone that knows they have a relative on the war memorial or is keen in local history to come along.”
It will run from noon until 1pm.
