Farm buildings are under threat

THE farm buildings at Kirklees Park, near Clifton, are under threat.

English Heritage has deemed the area one of the ten most important historic buildings and sites in Yorkshire and the Humber on the Heritage at Risk Register.

Among them is the Grade I aisled barn. One of the farm buildings of the Priory, now gone, with a 15th century timber frame, which was later stone-clad. The whole complex is continuing to decay and the north east corner of the stables and north threshing porch appears to be unstable. A report on the development options is under consideration by the owners.

The early 17th century cowhouse, two cell house, possibly slaughter house, is a Grade II listed building. The gable wall has partially collapsed and unstable.

The Grade II Gatehouse is a part timber-framed listed building. There are holding repairs in place but it is beginning to fall. Consent for an office or property has recently been obtained. The decay of the timber is getting worse and work is becoming urgent.

The early 16th century aisled barn was encased in stone during the early to mid 17th century. It is part of a little used farm complex and part of the roof is missing to the north and some timber decay to the frame.

The Malthouse, a Grade I listed building, forms part of the farm complex. The building is in a stable condition. There are now 902 Grade I and II buildings, monuments, archaeological sites, landscapes, battlefields, protected wrecks, places of worship and conservation areas at risk on the Yorkshire and The Humber register. Although 56 entries have been saved and remove from the register since 2011, 42 have been added.
