The Rastrick’s Got Talent annual showcase attracted a full house audience for an evening of family entertainment.
Back for its fourth year, acts from Rastrick High School and Sixth Form College took over the stage at the Lawrence Batley Theatre in Huddersfield for the first time to present an extravaganza of pure talent.
The audience and professional judging panel were impressed at the variety of the performances with musicians on piano, violin, drums and guitar, singers, dancers and Rastrick’s own beat box crew.
Many of the acts were original with some performers composing their own songs and others choreographing their own routines.
Judging the acts was tough given the range of ages and disciplines but expertly handled by a panel of professionals including Mike Heaton, drummer with band Embrace, and UK Beatboxing Champion and former student, Patrick Hirst. The pair performed together for the first time to open the show with a creative partnership of drums and urban vocal percussion.
This year’s winners came from Year 12. Laura Bottomley and Georgina Emsley’s spectacular original song ‘Outcast’ stole the show with its perfectly orchestrated vocal harmonies. Imogen Buck’s engrossing piano performance of ‘I’ by Yiruma took a close second.
Twins Grace and Eve King were joint third with Grace singing Kate Bush’s ‘Baboushka’ and Eve singing ‘As if we Never Said Goodbye’ from the musical ‘Sunset Boulevard’.
As the judges deliberated, the audience were entertained by spectacular performances by former students Rebecca Haley, Louise Woode and Joe Marriott who had returned from university especially to attend the event.
Organiser Deborah Adamson was thoroughly impressed by the dedication of all involved this year.
“The students and staff sacrificed a lot of their time between work and school to make this event a success, and it paid off. Everyone did a great job and by taking the production to the theatre, it gave the students a unique platform to display their abilities and get a feel of real stardom.
“Corey Gayle, my willing co-host and former student, took on a huge responsibility being next to me onstage and introducing the acts with aplomb.”
