A Brighouse dance group will take part in one of the last programmes to be screened from the iconic BBC Television Centre.

The Janet Austin Tappers will appear on The One Show on Friday, March 22, when they will recreate the record-breaking tap dance undertaken by the late Roy Castle in 1977.

Forty-two members of the Tappers’ classes in Brighouse and Huddersfield travelled to London on Saturday to take part in the recording. They joined around 500 dancers from all over the country who were put through their paces by choreographer Arlene Phillips before joining The One Show presenter Matt Baker for the recording in the Television Centre courtyard.

Janet Austin said: “The One Show will be the last programme to be recorded in the present location and they decided it would be a great idea to recreate the record-breaking tap dance that Roy Castle did for All Star Record Breakers in 1977, with Matt Baker (above) taking the lead role.

“On the day the rain stayed away but it was very cold in the courtyard. Despite that there was a fantastic atmosphere with everyone chatting to each other. Matt Baker told us we were taking part in making history - which got a loud cheer from the 500 excited dancers. We were given The One Show t-shirts to wear and the atmosphere was buzzing with everyone doing Mexican waves to keep warm while we waited.

“We did several takes and the whole thing was an amazing experience. We were still smiling when we got back to Brighouse.”

Janet said she believed the Tappers were invited to take part because they are annually involved in the charity tapathon at North Bridge Leisure Centre, Halifax, which raises money for the Roy Castle Lung Cancer Foundation.

“We did the same choreography as during the 1977 recording and the original girl who danced with Roy Castle in 1977 - now a grown woman -came back to take part.”
