Choir books its place at festival of brass and voices

CALDERDALE’s last remaining male voice choir is heading for London at the weekend to take part in the Festival of Brass and Voices.

Elland Male Voice Choir will be joining with other choirs from all parts of the country to raise the roof at the Royal Albert Hall on Saturday.

It will be the ninth time the festival - formerly Yorkshire Festival of Music - has been held and will raise money for Cancer Research UK. The last event, in November 2009, raised £150,000 for the charity.

It will feature a massed choir of around 1,600 voices and musical accompaniment will come from Grimethorpe Colliery Band and the Cory Band, conducted by William Relton. The assistant musical director and chorus master will be Malcolm Fairless, formerly of Huddersfield Choral Society and musical director of Gledholt Choir. Derrick McDermott, publicity secretary of Elland Male Voice Choir, said: “It is a spectacular occasion and the choir really enjoys participating.

“To sing in front of an audience of 6,000 people in such a wonderful setting as the Royal Albert Hall is a fantastic experience.”

The choir has 50 members from Elland, Brighouse and Halifax and was formed in 1949. The choir has been rehearsing hard for the festival and the repertoire of favourite pieces to be performed which will include Queen’s ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’, Elgar’s Nimrod, Verdi’s ‘Speed Your Journey’ and the ‘Nun’s Chorus’ by Strauss.

On Sunday the choirs will rejoin up again to give a free conbcert at the Scoop amphitheatre in London before heading home.

On December 23 Elland Male Voice Choir will entertain Christmas shoppers at Tesco in Brighouse to raise funds for Overgate Hospice.
