B & R Band aims for an historic hat-trick

BRIGHOUSE and Rastrick Band will be aiming for an historic hat-trick when they defend their title as National Champions at the Royal Albert Hall in London on Saturday.

The band has held the title for the past two years under the baton of professional conductor, Prof David King.

The National final is the most prestigious contest in the band calendar with around 20 of the top brass bands in the country, including close rivals Black Dyke, competing for the title.

B & R has won the title nine times in its 131-year history. All the competing bands will be playing the challenging test piece ‘Daphnis and Chloe’ by Ravel. Members of B & R are determined to pull out all the stops to secure an historic third victory in a row.

Band president Paul Beaumont said: “To win three times in a row is a very tall order but the band is absolutely determined to do all it can.

“David King has been rehearsing with the band for nine weeks, which is a long time for him, and I have to say the band is sounding fantastic at the moment. The test piece really suits the band’s style of playing and all the players are putting their heart and soul into the contest.

“I’m not sure when the hat-trick was last achieved but I know it was a long time ago.”

A coachload of supporters will travel to London to cheer the band on.

B & R will be hoping to display the trophy at their forthcoming concert at Huddersfield Town Hall on Saturday, October 27.

In the concert ‘Britain Celebrates’, B & R will share the stage with Rothwell Temperance Band conducted by Garry Cutt.

The band has just released its latest CD ‘War of the Worlds’ which features the music of Peter Graham. The CD has been hailed by critics as one of the musical and entertaining brass band recordings of the last five years.

Details of how to buy the CD are available on the band’s website at www.brighouseandrastrick.band.co.uk

Tickets for the concert on October 27 are available from 01484 223200.
