Aspiring artists impress in ‘Brook’

THE talent of young artists from the Brighouse area was celebrated when the fourth Peter Brook Art Prize was awarded at the Smith Art Gallery.
Students from Brighouse High School, Rastrick Sixth Form College and Brooksbank School, Elland, visited the ‘Brighouse and Beyond’ exhibition at the gallery last year and drew inspiration from the works on show by artists Matthew Evans, Barry de More and Matthew Midgley.
The overall winner of the prize was Rastrick Sixth Form College with individual awards going to Briony Dowson of Rastrick, April Heaton of Brighouse High and Emily Goldthorpe of Brooksbank.
Senior education officer Jeffrey Andrews said: “Each set of students responded in an entirely different way to the ‘Brighouse and Beyond’ exhibition and produced some very varied work of a high standard.”
Jackie Harrowsmith, subject leader for art at Rastrick High School, said: “The students felt that taking part was a superb experience. It brought the meaning of their work to life and the realities of meeting a deadline were fully understood.
“Having their work in a local gallery setting brings home to students the rich heritage that surrounds us and I hope their experience of exhibiting at the Smith Art Gallery leaves a lasting impression.
“I am always amazed at the variety and depth of study that students produce. This exhibition really celebrates students’ talents and I am impressed by the work on display by all of the schools.”
Mrs Molly Brook, widow of Peter Brook, presented the prizes to the winners and the exhibition was opened by the Mayor of Calderdale, Coun Nader Fekri. Two hundred visitors attended the event.
Gallery assistant Robert Goulding said he had not seen so many people at an exhibition preview since the Peter Brook retrospective in 2008.
Artist Peter Brook started the art prize in 2008, a year before he died.
The exhibition runs until mid-February.
