BRIGHOUSE Town are trying a new venue for their annual dinner this year.
They are leaving behind Berties Banqueting Suite in Elland and moving in on Saturday, March 13 at the Holiday Inn at Clifton.
Chairman Chris Lister says they have landed a good deal and the establishment is in Brighouse, so they are keen to support it.
Tickets for the £30-a-head meal with entertainment have been selling like the proverbial hot cakes and if you want a good meal and to see local comedian Johnny Casson then you had better give Mr Lister a ring on his mobile straight away.
Brighouse Town are right now putting this town on the football map with their push into the top four of the Koolsport NCEL Division One and all credit must go to the managerial duo of Mark Brier and Darren Attwood.
It doesn't appear to matter if they are "robbed" of a good player or two by clubs in leagues above them, they just come up with more, and on the face of it, better players.
Witnessing their performance on Tuesday night in the top of the table clash with Leeds Carnegie, it was also clear that messrs Brier and Attwood are technically aware, shrewd and on top of the coaching game.
Mr Lister and his colleagues made a sound judgment when bringing these boys on board. I just hope that by March 13 the club is still on the promotion trail in their second season in semi-professional football and we could be looking to Premier Division football in the NCEL next term.

  • I RECEIVED a call this week from a Stephen Mitchell in Halifax who is bringing boxing icon Nigel Benn to Bar Eleven in Halifax on Friday, March 12.

  • There is room for just 120 people and tickets, including the three-course meal, are £80 each.
Benn will relive his World Championship boxing career with the aid of big screens and will also enter into a Q&A session with the diners along with his colleague/MC and former boxer Kevin Lueshing.
In the course of the conversation with Stephen, I found out that Benn is now living in Spain and is a born again Christian.
I am told he is an interesting and amusing speaker and it is very rare indeed that Calderdale has a visit from a boxing champion who will be in town from 7.30pm until midnight.
If you would like a ticket then please give Stephen a ring on 07505 396106.

  • IF you remember I said in this column in a mini preview to the current soccer season that Stuart McCall should have gone at the end of last season. He goes now with nothing to gain for the fans or his board this term and it must be a huge disappointment to the 12,000 average crowds they get and the board who gave him their backing.

  • With crowds like that City deserve better and, like Leeds, they must start climbing back up the divisions.
I see they are putting in a caretaker until the end of the season and then making their choice. It was interesting to see BBC commentator Guy Mowbray on Monday night wink when mentioning the name of Dean Windass as he closed the regional programme on the Late Football League Show.
There should be no sentiment in professional sport. Hard decisions have to be made and I don't think for one minute he should be their choice even as caretaker.
An announcement is due today (Thursday) so we will have to watch this space as they say.
