Practical way to tackle dog mess

Laverock Lane, Brighouse.

A year on from the inception of area forums we have been asked how they could be improved. A popular view was that individual forums should be based on wards rather than larger areas.

The latest meeting culminated with a lengthy address by Coun Colin Stout on that perennial problem of dog dirt. His conclusions were that dog walkers should be educated and perpetrators heavily fined.

On a practical level those who want to be educated are now responsible citizens and those who do not are difficult to convince. Prosecutions are notoriously difficult and expensive to bring with a low rate of success. Two facts were not mentioned:

* The council will not provide funds for the introduction of any further specialised disposal bins and suggest that general rubbish bins be used: A retrograde step for obvious reasons.

* The 3Bs are still operating the method introduced by the environmental group Calder Forward, which involves spraying dog dirt with non-toxic yellow paint and putting small notices pegged near by with appropriate slogans.

As dog walkers usually follow the same route, a follow up or two of spraying is important, but after a couple of weeks this method is often successful.

If anyone knows of a problem please contact me on 01484 387052 (leave a message if I'm not in) and I will inspect the area with you, apply the paint and labels and follow up.
