A NEW face has been welcomed at Brighouse Police Station.

Sergeant Gary Walker who will be responsible for the Rastrick ward has been in the police force for 25 years. He has worked as a traffic officer and a custody sergeant in Halifax. His job has also taken him overseas to Eastern Timor and Jordan for police recruiting.

He said he was very keen to come to Brighouse and has been asking to be moved to the area for a while. “I am born and bred in West Yorkshire and I think Brighouse is a fantastic place.

“Me and my team can offer a whole range of skills and experience and I am looking forward to my new role. I have every intention of staying where I am for a number of years.

“I am a friendly person and I am always willing to speak to people and I am open to new ideas. If anyone has any suggestions about what we can do better then I am happy to listen.”

Sergeant Walker has every intention of getting out and about and is keen to patrol his area. “I’m not the type of officer who likes to be sat at a desk so people will be seeing me in the area.”

Inspector Mohammed Nawaz, who heads the team, said: “I’m delighted he is coming to work in the Lower Valley. I have worked with him before and he is a very experienced officer who I believe will do a good quality of service.”

Sergeant Walker takes over from Sgt Tony Johnson who has left to work in custody at Halifax. Insp Nawaz said: “I thank Sgt Johnson who was in his post for four years. He has worked in Brighouse providing high quality service to the local area and made a valued contribution.”
