A POLICE inspector is asking residents to get switched on to burglars.
As the dark nights approach Inspector Mohammed Nawaz, who heads the Lower Valley Neighbourhood Policing Team, is encouraging home owners to protect their property.
He said around this time of year they do notice a slight increase in burglaries.
“I want to remind householders to make sure they do everything possible to deter burglaries. Houses which are easily identified as unoccupied are particularly vulnerable from mid afternoon,” he said.
“A few simple steps to reduce the opportunity for burglars are to leave a light on inside the house. The intention is to create an impression that someone is in and it is a significant deterrent. Time switches are an excellent way of regulating one or more lights.
“Are you part of a Neighbourhood Watch? If your not please join one and look out for each other. Use lighting outside the house at both front and back. Make sure you light up the areas burglars would use to hide in.
“Burglars don’t want to be seen. Darkness allows them to feel comfortable and any lighting will make them feel exposed. Remember a burglars impression that he or she can be seen or might be seen that matters the most, not whether someone is actually watching.”
Ambulance bosses are urging residents to make sure their house name or number is clearly visible from the road in case of an accident. Poorly lit house numbers may cause a needless delay in locating a house.
