MORE than £2,900 has been raised for the Meningitis Trust in memory of former Bailiff Bridge schoolgirl Kate Lever.

Kate died from the disease thirty years ago at the age of 12. One of her friends Stephen Sutcliffe, who was a member of Brighouse Swimming Club with Kate, raised £2,465 by taking part in a gruelling open water swimming challenge this summer.

Stephen, who lives in Lightcliffe, successfully completed the British Gas Outdoor Swims which were held on the River Thames, Lake Windermere, Salford Quays, Strathclyde Water and Alton Water.

In addition £370 was raised at a reunion disco for former pupils of Bailiff Bridge School from the late 1970s and early 1980s. Tickets were sold and there was a raffle on the night in memory of Kate.

Kate’s sister Janette Lever-Smith said: “The reunion was great and we all had a brilliant time. About 30 people turned up as well as representatives from the Meningitis Trust.

“I would like to thank Phil Barsby and Craig Rushworth for their help and all the businesses who gave raffle prizes.”

Wyke Wanderers FC joined the fund-raising effort by holding a social night at Scholes Cricket Club which made £72 for the trust.
