The owners of a Hipperholme firm which set on fire have praised the firefighters for their rapid response.

Clare Horner was working on some of her artwork in RSH Services (Halifax) Ltd in Brighouse Road when she heard a weird noise. “I looked out and saw smoke coming from the back. I quickly realised that there wasn’t anything behind us and went out from my office into the workshop which was filled with smoke,” she said.

“It’s a good job I heard it start or the fire could have been a lot worse. I called the fire service and it felt like ages until they turned up but in actual fact they were here very quickly. “The fire brigade was marvellous and I think it is shocking that they are cutting their budget because they did an amazing job. They made sure we were ok too.”

Four engines from Brighouse, Halifax and Odsal were needed to tackle the blaze. They were alerted at 1.50am on Sunday and found around 20 per cent of the ground floor, including two cars, alight.

Clare said that two of the businesses which operate from the building suffered smoke damage and had to be closed for a few days. “It burnt the porch down at the side and had started to go to the top window but the firefighters got to it in time which was really lucky,” added Clare.

She said because their security system was so good even the firefighters were struggling to gain entry. The security system is still in fully working order.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

The teams were there until 5.30am.
