Crime figures best in region
POLICE officers who patrol Hipperholme and Lightcliffe have been praised for their positive contribution to the area.
The area used to be plagued by problems of anti-social behaviour but in recent years the area has been turned around, thanks to the hard work of the neighbourhood policing team, according to residents and councillors.
Councillor Colin Raistrick (Ind, Hipp/Light) who chaired the Hipperholme and Lightcliffe ward forum said all three ward councillors pushed for neighbourhood policing and would support it for the foreseeable future. “PC Nick Bamforth and PCSO Ian Robinson are doing some really good work in this area and I would encourage people to continue to contact them and attend the regular meetings they arrange.”
Councillor David Kirton (Con, Hipp/Light) who Calderdale Council’s representative for the West Yorkshire Police Authority said customer satisfaction within Calderdale and especially the Lower Valley is the best and the crime figures were also some of the best in the region.
Residents agreed and said they had done a brilliant job in the area.
Sergeant Dean Maddocks who is responsible for the area said the number of crimes in the ward were up compared to the previous six weeks but were down compared to the same period the year before.
He said there had been ten house burglaries, eight of which had Euro profile locks snapped. He had also put additional patrols in the Bramley Lane area of Hipperholme where there had been an increase and that his officers were working with colleagues in the Bradford area to prevent them.
He reported one man being arrested in relation to an incident in Denholmegate Road where the offenders was disturbed by officers in the early hours. He said they were throwing items out of the car as they drove to Bradford. However some of the items of sentimental value to the owners were retrieved by the police.
He encouraged people to secure their homes and any garden sheds they might have.
There were ten thefts from vehicles, where access was gained via insecure doors. Sgt Maddocks said: “We are finding groups of thieves, particularly the younger end, going out on a night and trying the doors until they find some that are insecure. That is so when we arrest them we don’t find any tools such as screwdrivers or pliers to indicate they had been breaking into vehicles.”
Anti-social behaviour was down from 36 reports the previous six weeks to 14. “This might be because we are dealing with the problems or that people have stopped reporting it to us. It can frustrating if we have not got the information and may appear that there isn’t a problem when there is.”
